Proper young ladies of the ton-especially ones who have very small dowries-are not encouraged to have an interest in intellectual pursuits. Indeed, the only things they are encouraged to pursue are eligible bachelors. So, the headstrong Sloane sisters must keep their passions a secret. Ah, but secret passions are wont to lead a lady into trouble . . .

Scandalously Yours by Cara ElliottThe eldest of the three Sloane sisters, Olivia is unafraid to question the boundaries of Society-even if it does frequently land her in trouble. Disdaining the glittery world of balls and courtship, Olivia prefers to spend her time writing fiery political essays under a pseudonym for London’s leading newspaper. But when her columns attract the attention of the oh-so-proper Earl of Wrexham, Olivia suddenly finds herself dancing on the razor’s edge of scandal. With the help of her sisters, she tries to stay one step ahead of trouble . . .

However, after a series of madcap misadventures, Wrexham, a former military hero who is fighting for social reform in Parliament, discovers Olivia’s secret. To her surprise, he proposes a temporary alliance to help win passage of his bill. Passion flares between them, but when a political enemy kidnaps the earl’s young son, they must make some dangerous decisions . . . and trust that love will conquer all.

Read an excerpt from Scandalously Yours:

“How dare you spy on me, sir!” demanded Olivia, once she had mastered her emotions enough to speak.

He fixed her with a commanding stare, the one that had set many a seasoned soldiers to quaking in their boots. “I would not have had to resort to such tactics if you had shown me the courtesy of answering my letters.”

Olivia refused to be intimidated. Lifting her chin, she scowled back at him. “I did answer them.”

“With a single word—no.”

“And what,” she asked with excruciating politeness, “did you not understand about such a simple syllable?”

John couldn’t help but admire her grit. It took courage and resourcefulness to play in a man’s world. And she played well, he conceded.

Expelling a harried sigh, he felt his anger dissipate just as quickly as it had come. She had no choice but to guard her secret very carefully. “Look, at least hear me out, Miss Sloane. Tracking down The Beacon has led me on a merry dance throughout Town.”

Olivia paled at the mention of the nom de plume. Turning abruptly, she plunged off the path and darted around a tangle of holly.

“Wait!” John ducked under the prickly branches, losing his hat in the process.

“Go away!” Her voice was muffled by the overhanging leaves.

“Not until we talk!”

“I’ve nothing to say to you.”

The Devil take it. All but a last little flutter of her skirts disappeared behind a shaggy yew hedge. Swearing under his breath, John cut through a patch of lavender. He hadn’t come this far to be rebuffed. She would damn well listen. Or else…

Several long strides brought him within arm’s reach of her. “Confound it, Miss Sloane, stop and listen,” he called, lunging for her sleeve.

As his fingers seized the fabric, his boot snagged on a twist of morning glory. Pitched off-balance, he stumbled and fell, taking her with him. Tangled together, they hit the ground hard, their momentum rolling them into a patch of pachysandra.

“Ooof!” Olivia’s flailing kick caught him square in the shin.

Flat on his back, John got a momentary glimpse of Olivia’s irrepressible curls dancing in the breeze before another half turn landed him on his stomach. Burning with embarrassment, he tried to right himself, only to find that she was sprawled across his…posterior.

Bloody hell, he had never felt like a bigger arse in all his life.

They both started wriggling at the same time. He managed to twist face-up just as she slipped on the glossy leaves and fell back down atop him.

“Miss Sloane,” he gasped.

“Lord Wrexham,” wheezed Olivia, an odd little burr roughening her already throaty voice.

For an instant, he feared she was going to burst into tears.

Instead, she began to laugh.

And laugh.

Scottie was right. It was a delightful sound, its top notes shaded with a rich, sensual echo that seemed to stroke over his skin like a moon-dappled midnight breeze.

A twitch tugged at his lips. His dignity—as well as his coat—was in tatters, his pride was bruised, and though he should not find it at all funny, John felt a rumble vibrate deep in his throat.

Olivia tried to get up again, but her limbs were too weak with mirth. “Good Lord, what a ridiculous picture we must make!” she wheezed in between burbles of laughter.

“Here, let me help you.” Levering to his feet, John lifted her up and as she seemed a bit shaky, he kept his hands on her waist.

“Well, it’s not every day I take a tumble in the hay with an earl,” she quipped.

“Please don’t think that I make a habit of ruining a young lady’s reputation,” he answered.

Her cheeks, already pink from the breeze, turned a lusher shade of red as she looked up and wet her lips.

John felt his body clench. His legendary sang froid began to bubble…His steely self-control went up in smoke…

Olivia flinched as his mouth possessed hers. She was like summer rain against his tongue. So soft, so sweet.

Her hands came up around his neck.

Hell, it would serve him right if she throttled him on the spot.

But then, all of a sudden, she was kissing him back.

In a daze, John twisted around and braced her back against the ivy-covered wall, the glossy leaves crackling under the crush of silk. He was dimly aware of a roaring like cannonfire in his ears, and as his hands slid down to cup her breasts he realized it was the pounding of his own heart.

Knocking all reason to flinders.

A gust of air ruffled his hair, stirring wild, wicked thoughts of her waltzing naked through the trees. In response, his own privy parts began dancing to their own drummer. Thump. Thump. Thump. His pulse was pounding a military tattoo, commanding all soldiers to stand erect.

And Dear God, his Major Organ was responding with unabashed enthusiasm.

Olivia didn’t seem disgusted by his display of primitive lust. With a tiny moan, she tightened her hold and hitched her hips into him.

Lud, it felt good. No, better than good.

And they start to wonder if fate has offered them a second chance at happiness– if only they’re brave enough to take the risk and let love back into their lives.
Q&A with author Jessica Lemmon:

Is there a message you’d like your readers to take away from BRINGING HOME THE BAD BOY?

That there is life for those of us left behind after someone we love passes away. It will be different than the life we had while they were here, but it will get good again.

What books do you curl up with when you need a comfort read?

Lori Foster, Jill Shalvis, Kristin Ashley, and Roxanne St. Claire to name a few. I also love to try new authors. Some of the recent ones I have discovered are Shannon Richard, Lauren Layne, and Rachael Lacey. They are fantastic!

What is your guilty pleasure?

Anything fried. Specifically, potato chips and french fries.

If you could write yourself into any book, what would it be?

I wanted to be Bella from Twilight so bad I couldn’t see straight! I think there is always a part of us, as women, that feels very plain and unnoticed. When the hottest guy around takes notice, likes you back… well, that’s every high school dream come true, isn’t it?

Which of your books was the most fun to write?

Tempting the Billionaire. I knew there was something special about Shane August, and that book was just a joy to write.

Which the most challenging?

Without a doubt, Rescuing the Bad Boy. Donovan and Sofie’s book was originally written back in 2010. Then rewritten in 2011. And, just because I was a masochist, before I handed it into my agent, I rewrote it one more time in 2012. Then, guess what? Once my editor and I talked about the direction of the Second Chance series, I decided to write it ONE. MORE. TIME. Yep, I wrote it again. And while I wondered if this rewrite just might kill me, I have to admit that the story is exactly as it should be.

About author Jessica Lemmon:
jessicalemmon_author photoJessica Lemmon has always been a dreamer. At some point, she decided head-in-the-clouds thinking was childish, went out, and got herself a job . . . and then she got another one because that one was lousy. And when that one stopped being fulfilling, she went out and got another . . . and another. Soon it became apparent she’d only be truly happy doing what she loved. And since “eating potato chips” isn’t a viable career, she opted to become a writer. With fire in her heart, she dusted off a book she’d started years prior, finished it, and submitted it. It may have been the worst book ever, but it didn’t stop her from writing another one. Now she has several books finished, several more started, and even more marinating in her brain (which currently resides in the clouds, thankyouverymuch), and she couldn’t be happier. She firmly believes God gifts us with talents for a purpose, and with His help, you can create the life you want. (While eating potato chips.)

“Know why I moved here?” he asked, keeping his voice low.

She wrenched her eyes from his and focused on a spot over his shoulder.

“Because you didn’t want to live in Columbus anymore.” That’s what he’d told her. That he wanted a change. That he and Lyon had outgrown the house. And, she imagined it’d be hard to live in the house where Rae had passed.

“But why here?”

His fingers grazed her jaw and turned her head, his palm moving to her neck where he cupped her nape and forced her eyes to his.

Reluctantly, she met them.

“Rae’s more alive when you’re around, Ace.”

Her heart, oh her heart. Kicking against her chest in a confusing, hectic rhythm.

“You bring her to life for Lyon—more than anyone else. I need him to remember her because he can’t remember her alive.” His hold stayed, his palm warming her neck, his gaze unwavering.

She tried to separate the two feelings she was having—one that she was now talking about Rae with Evan and two, that he was touching her while talking about Rae.

Before she could, his lips closed over hers.

Her thoughts short-circuited.

This wasn’t anything like a soft peck hello. This was his lips moving over hers, slanting over hers, warm and firm and then his mouth opened and—

Oh my gosh!

His wet, warm tongue slid along the seam of her lips and she stopped being passive and started kissing him back. When she would have touched her tongue to his, he relocated it, running along her bottom lip instead and tugging with his teeth.

If she’d been standing, her knees would have given out and dropped her right on her butt.

And then there was the palm on her neck, now spearing up through her hair and clutching onto a handful of it. He held her captive, his hand fisting her hair as he angled his mouth again. In response to the soft whimper escaping her throat, he swept his tongue into her mouth. He tangled his tongue with hers once, twice, and released her.

When he pulled his mouth away, a long, satisfied sigh escaped her lips. Because that was a kiss. A kiss to rival all other kisses.

She opened her eyes to realize A) she’d closed her eyes and B) she’d at some point wrapped both hands around his forearms where she was holding tight and C) Evan looked as pleased as she felt.

“God damn, Ace. Your mouth.” His eyes flicked to her lips. Lips still tingling from the rough scrape from the stubble surrounding his.

She concurred with that sentiment. Not that she said anything. She’d gone dumb; completely mute.

He backed away, but held onto her chin and tweaked it lightly with the rough pad of one thumb. “That’s the way this is gonna go from now on.”

Her breathing went shallow, her thoughts went muzzy and her head blurred as her heart palpated to the point of panic attack.

“Sorry, Rae.”

She didn’t mean to say it, and it had only been a whisper, but by the look twisting Evan’s face—the angry look twisting his face—he’d heard. And he hadn’t liked what he’d heard.

“Sorry,” she said to him this time. “I should go.”

Unbelievably, he leaned closer. She pulled her chin back until she realized she likely had a double chin, then settled her head on her neck in a more reasonable position.

Gosh. He was making her crazy.

Blog Tour, Review & Giveaway: Never Surrender to a Scoundrel by Lily Dalton

Author: Lily Dalton

Release Info: Available January 27, 2015!

unnamedA Reckless Desire . . .
Lady Clarissa Bevington is in trouble. A reckless indiscretion has left her with two choices: ruin her family with the scandal of the Season, or marry Mr. Kincraig, the notorious scoundrel mistaken as her lover. Desperate and disgraced, Clarissa vows to love and cherish a veritable stranger, a man whose eyes smolder with danger-and undeniable desire . . .
An Unexpected Arrangement . . .
As an agent for the Crown, Lord Dominick Blackmer has spent the last two years guarding Clarissa’s grandfather from an unknown assassin while disguised as the rakehell Kincraig. His mission may now be over, but his duty has just begun. Salvaging his beautiful, impetuous wife’s virtue will cost him his fortune and his position as an officer-but it might save him from the ghosts that haunt his own past. When their marriage “in name only” leads to exquisite seduction, Dominick must risk the only thing he has left to lose . . . his heart.

My Rating:

My Thoughts:

Never Surrender to a Scoundrel by Lily Dalton is the third novel in the One Scandalous Season series. However, this final installment of the trilogy detailing the romantic lives of the Bevington sisters easily stands on its own. You need not have read Never Desire a Duke or Never Entice an Earl in order to enjoy this novel, although I would urge you to, since they are both delightful. Lady Clarissa and her future husband appear in each of the pervious novels and its fun to catch glimpses of their future friendship. Check out the Giveaway link at the bottom of this post for a chance to win all three books!

The marriage of convenience between Lady Clarissa Bevington and Lord Dominick Blackmer (originally known to her as Mr. Kincraig) wasn’t very convenient for either party. Clarissa had given her heart –and her virtue– to another and Blackmer was anxious to return to foreign duty as an spy for the Crown. When Clarissa’s beau unexpectedly marries another, Blackmer is caught up in her scandal when her family mistakenly assumes he’s to blame for her ‘interesting condition’. Rather than forsake the kind young lady, and out of deep respect for her grandfather, Blackmer agrees to marry Clarissa, keep her secret and raise her child as his own. I particularly enjoyed when Clarissa discovered her groom wasn’t actually Mr. Kincraig, the rake she’d presumed him to be.

I found Never Surrender to a Scoundrel to be a perfectly lovely read, one of those books that leaves you smiling and satisfied (and in this case, anxiously awaiting Lily Dalton’s next book). Clarissa and Dominick have a wonderful, mature relationship. Despite the circumstances at the beginning of their marriage, they quickly grow closer and become friends. Clarissa’s defense of Dominick against her family’s unfounded vitriol was especially touching and exemplified her respect and appreciation for his sacrifice. Friendship soon develops into much more, as they give into their mutual attraction. What could have felt rushed or forced in the hands of a less talented author felt like natural and organic character development. There is plenty of Blackmer family drama and secrets from Dominick’s past missions to add excitement and mystery. These plotlines add to, rather than detract from the story of Clarissa and Dominick, and highlight the strength of their partnership.

About author Lily Dalton:

She now lives in Houston, Texas, with her family. Excerpt (steamy and funny!):

He set the nightshirt back on the bed, and spoke over his shoulder.

“I think it’s time you returned to your room.”

He spoke the words without passion. She could only assume he’d had enough talking and wanted her to leave. The night air chilled her skin, and she wrapped her arms around her waist for warmth. She felt rebuffed by him. Stung. Her husband, the man with whom she would spend the rest of her days, did not have the slightest interest in spending a moment more in her company.

She knew she ought to calmly say ‘Very well then, I bid you good night,’ and quit the room, but she feared with a certainty that if she opened her mouth and attempted to utter a single syllable, her voice would falter and reveal the confused tumult of her emotions.

Not because she cared for him. Of course she didn’t. Clearly he did not care for her.

They’d been thrown together, and no amount of wishful thinking or good intentions would create a spark between them, when such a spark was never intended to be. She blinked away tears. Foolish tears! As if he had hurt her, but he hadn’t.

It had just been a long day, and a long night before that, and she’d made a terrible mess of everything, and she hated Quinn. And perhaps still loved him. And she was lonely. So very lonely and frightened of what the future held.

So instead she nodded jerkily, her chin outthrust, and turned on her slippered foot to escape into the dark dressing closet, taking care to close the first and the second door firmly behind her. Miss Randolph reclined in her sleeping gown and robe on the chaise with her book open and steepled across her forehead, snoring, which was just as well because Clarissa could not face the woman’s questions or her pity.

She doused the lamps and, in darkness, with only the scant light from behind the fire grate to see, crawled into bed and lay on unfamiliar sheets, her mind tangled with thoughts of… Mr. Blackmer.

Suddenly, the door swung open, and a shadow moved toward her, stealthily and swift, with only the faint white swath across his hips visible in the night. She recognized Blackmer instantly and desire ignited inside her.        He crouched above her, breathing hard, his skin still damp and the tight flex of muscles in his shoulders darkly illuminated. The scent of the soap from his bath filled her nostrils. Her pulse raced, her heart near exploding.

“You,” he growled deep in his throat. “Are my preference.”

A second later, he kissed her hard, pressing his thumb against the side of her jaw, commanding her lips to part while his tongue boldly entered and teased. She gasped for breath, stunned into half-senselessness…and surrendered, her mouth opening fully to accept each deep, possessing stroke.

He gave a husky groan. His large hands caught hers by the wrists, pinning her to the mattress. She squirmed beneath him—but with no intent to escape.

Moments before he had dismissed her coldly, and made her feel invisible and unwanted and yet in this moment, he revealed his true feelings, ones he’d tried to conceal. She knew without a doubt that her husband desired her. Something about that made her weak, and—

His mouth moved to her cheek…her neck, leaving her skin hot and awakened wherever his lips touched. Sensations she’d never experienced spiraled up from inside her, delicious and achingly sweet, awakening a need in her body and rendering her unexpectedly wild.

God help her, she didn’t understand, but she wanted him as well. The moment he released her hands she moaned and seized his shoulders, sliding her hands upward over his neck, finding unexpected appreciation in the powerful contraction and flux of his muscles beneath her palms. He exhaled, filling her mouth with his breath, and sucked her bottom lip—

Only to groan and twist away.

No. She reached, her hands trailing over his shoulders and his arms, desperately wanting more. More of his kiss, and his warm, firm skin. And yes, for him to ravish her so she would forget—

Then nothing.

The bed creaked, relieved of his weight. She heard his sharp exhalation of breath–a laugh, perhaps?

“Good night then, Mrs. Blackmer,” he murmured.

Silence filled the room.

“Good night,” she answered breathlessly.

He crossed the room, disappearing into the dressing closet, gone the way he had come. She heard the door close.

After a long moment of silence, Miss Randolph’s voice came from the direction of the chaise. “Well that was rather thrilling.”

About Author Kelly Bowen:

Kelly Bowen grew up in Manitoba, Canada. She worked her way through her teenage years as a back country trail guide and ranch hand and spent a year working on a cattle station in Australia.  She attended the University of Manitoba and earned a Master of Science degree in veterinary physiology and endocrinology.

But it was Kelly’s infatuation with history and a weakness for a good love story that led her down the path of historical romance.  When she is not writing, she seizes every opportunity to explore ruins and battlefields.

Currently, Kelly lives in Winnipeg with her husband and two boys, all of whom are wonderfully patient with the writing process.  Except, that is, when they need a goalie for street hockey.

Devoted to Him Blog Tour: Q&A with author Sofia Tate

Author: Sofia Tate
Availability: December 2, 2014 (E-book)
Publisher: Grand Central Publishing (Forever Yours)
Series Info: #2 in Davison & Allegra series (Breathless for Him, #1)
Buy Links:
Devoted to Him by Sofia Tate CoverTwo months ago, Allegra Orsini nearly lost the man of her dreams. Thankfully Davison Cabot Berkeley, a powerful billionaire who always gets what he wants, had refused to allow anything-or anyone-to come between them. Now back in the arms of the man she loves, Allegra receives an incredible proposal.
Allegra is invited to study under the opera world’s most legendary diva. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity . . . but it means moving to Italy for a month. Thirty days without Davison’s touch. Allegra isn’t sure she can survive it-especially when Davison begins pulling away for reasons she can’t figure out. Is the man who has given her more passion and pleasure than she has ever known about to break her heart? Soon Allegra starts to realize that Davison could be guarding a secret even more devastating.
My Thoughts: Davison Berkeley was a handsome young billionaire from a powerful family, with a successful company and the ‘perfect’ girlfriend – and he was completely miserable.  Until one evening, a chance encounter with fledgling opera singer Allegra Orsini lit Davison’s world with passion and love.  Now, having fought the forces that tried to keep them apart (see Breathless for Him, book #1), Davison and Allegra must learn how to co-exist in a relationship, how to balance their careers and interests.   Allegra and Davison learn that lust isn’t enough to sustain them (though they sure have plenty of it!), rather it’s only through trust and true devotion that they can build the kind of partnership and future they both desire.
Sofia Tate, the author of the sensual tales of young opera singer Allegra Orsini and her love Davison Berkeley, took the time to answer some questions regarding her favorite books and guilty pleasures. I want to pop some popcorn, chill some wine and hand out with Sofia after hearing her answers!

– Is there a message you’d like your readers to take away from DEVOTED TO HIM?

Great question! I think it would be this-if the person you love is keeping something from you, then you must have trust and faith in that person that there is a good reason for it.

-Do you have a favorite book or author you like to recommend?

Many of my favorites are listed in the answer below. I will mention an author & series I recently discovered: Colette Auclair, the author of the Aspen Valley series from Pocket Star. The first two books are THROWN and JUMPED, and the third book in the series, BRANDED, will be out on December 15. It’s a contemporary romance series set in Aspen, Colorado. I love her voice, and I found a new Book Boyfriend in Jack Cormier, the hero from BRANDED.

-Do you have a comfort read?

I have a few depending on the mood I’m in: SINFUL by Charlotte Featherstone, BEFORE JAMAICA LANE by Samantha Young, THE WILL and SWEET DREAMS by Kristen Ashley, and any book in THE BLACKSTONE AFFAIR series by Raine Miller.

-What’s your guilty pleasure?

THE REAL HOUSEWIVES OF BEVERLY HILLS (my favorites are Lisa and Yolanda) and VANDERPUMP RULES on Bravo. I’m so tempted to create a character based on Jax!
Also, every Monday night, I watch reruns of BATTLE OF THE NETWORK STARS on ESPN Classic. I loved watching it every year when I was growing up.

About Sofia Tate:

 My Thoughts:

I have been a HUGE fan of author Kristen Callihan’s DARKEST LONDON series since I first read the series prequel novella, EMBER.  From there, I have eagerly devoured each of her books.  Diana Gabaldon was right when she said: “Callihan has a great talent for sexual tension and Jaw-dropping plots that weave together brilliantly in the end.”  Her talented storytelling draws you in with a perfect combination of compelling characters and creative plotting, with more than a little steam.  Be sure to check out the Giveaway detailed below for your chance to win some of these amazing books!

I was thrilled to have the opportunity to ask Ms. Callihan some questions about her series and its latest installment, EVERNIGHT

Q&A with Kristen Callihan:

What inspired you to create the imaginative and magical world of your Darkest London series?

Victorian London was my inspiration. All those narrow lanes, flickering gas lamps, and fog shrouded courts were perfect fodder. I was also inspired by those who came before me. Comic like the X-Men, gas lamp tales such as Dracula, Dorian Grey, Jekyll and Hyde, and many more helped forge my imagination.

If you could choose one of the supernatural abilities possessed by one of your characters, which one would you want, and why?

Hmm….probably Jack Talent’s shape-shifting ability. It would get me into a lot of places. 😉

If you were transported into a novel, would you prefer it to be a historical novel or a paranormal one?

Paranormal, definitely. If I’m going to be forced to live with corsets and poor medical care, I’d like to be a strong immortal, please.

Imagine Will Thorne had a Twitter account, how would he describe the events of ‘Evernight’ in 140 characters or less?

Homicidal yet irresistible charmer meets irritating yet lovely inventor. She captures his heart; he turns her into a wanton, lusty wench.*

*For some reason, my wife takes umbrage with this description, and offers this alternate ending: She teaches him to trust; He teaches her about joy (Fine, this is true as well, but I like my version better.)

About Author Kristen Callihan:

Author Kristen CallihanKristen Callihan is a child of the eighties, which means she’s worn neon skirts, black lace gloves, and combat boots (although never all at once) and can quote John Hughes movies with the best of them. A lifelong daydreamer, she finally realized that the characters in her head needed a proper home and thus hit the keyboard. She believes that falling in love is one of the headiest experiences a person can have, so naturally she writes romance. Her love of superheroes, action movies, and history led her to write historical paranormals. She lives in the Washington, D.C., area and, when not writing, looks after two children, one husband, and a dog-the fish can fend for themselves.

While you wait to see if you’ve won, enjoy this delicious (potentially NSFW, but oh so yummy) excerpt from EVERNIGHT; it’s so good you might not want to wait!

Excerpt from EVERNIGHT: .

Cool, hard, smooth, hot. The texture of his skin was unlike anything she’d ever felt. The metal made it smooth and cool and hard. Where not altered by metal, his skin was like hot satin, only silkier and tight with strength.

His flesh twitched beneath her palms as she mapped his chest. Every breath he took sounded loud and clear in her ears. And all the while, he watched her.

A quiver rippled along the backs of her thighs, up over her bottom, and crawled along her spine. Damn it, she was better than this. She was not a creature of base desires, but of logic and restraint. Her breath moved in and out, a slow, steady rhythm as she stroked him.

Neither of them spoke. The crackle of the fire in the grate, along with the occasional creak of the house settling, surrounded them. Beneath heavy lids, Thorne tracked her every move. And her touch grew unsteady. A momentary weakness he jumped upon.

“Does it feel good to you?” he drawled, low and easy. “Touching me?”

Instantly, the space between her legs clenched tight. Holly kept her touch impersonal. She could not live with the ignominy of revealing her wants to Thorne, who would treat her weakness as a bloody good joke. “It is a task. Just like any other.” A bald-faced lie if ever she told one.

His nostrils flared, the platinum in his eyes shining bright. “Then why do I smell your cunny growing wet with need?”

Holly stopped, her palm flat against his pectoral muscle, as more slick heat flooded her sex. Oh, this was beyond the pale. What on earth had gotten into the blasted demon? “Being crude is not going to get a rise out of me, Mr. Thorne.”

A small, cruel smile curled his lips. “Not going to deny it, are you, Miss Evernight?”

“Blather.” She took up stroking an area tangled with platinum webbing with more force than necessary. “That is all you’re about. Ridiculous blather. And I will not engage in such nonsense.”

Holly concentrated on pulling the metal from him. Not on his scent, clean and pleasing in the space between them. Or the way his skin grew increasingly warmer.

When he spoke again, it was soft, teasing. “Do you know that when I said “cunny” your sweet scent grew stronger?”

Again she stopped. His dense muscles tightened beneath her nails. “Mr. Thorne—”

“Do you wonder,” he whispered, holding her gaze with his, “if my cock is affected?” A dark brow lifted, his fangs glinting. “If it is more metal than flesh? Hard for you?”

She would not look down at the appendage in question. It was difficult enough to pretend each time that she wasn’t aware of that part of him, or that she hadn’t seen it grow and lengthen beneath the covers. Oh, she knew precisely how long and thick he was, and precisely how aroused. Each and every time.

His gaze upon her burned. “Do you want to see my cock, Miss Evernight? Feel it move inside of you?”

Gods, he made her feel empty, made her want to be filled up. Her hands turned to fists. “Stop it. Now, Mr. Thorne.”

He rose up on his elbows, his white hair sliding over his broad and dusky shoulders, his defined abdomen tightening. “Or. What?”

Holly sat back on the stool by the table, placing her hands upon her lap so that he wouldn’t see them trembling. “Why are you doing this?”

“Why not?”

She could not look away from the black and platinum starburst of his gaze, so very brilliant. So very angry and taunting. Her nails dug into her palms. “Find your amusement elsewhere.”

His lean hips canted just a bit, an utterly crude gesture that held her in thrall. “I’d rather find it with you.”

“I’m helping you, aren’t I?” She hated how the words came out in a near-desperate pitch. But he had to stop. Agitation had her breath coming on hard and fast, pressing her now-heavy breasts against her too-tight bodice.

“Helping me,” he scoffed. “Do not skew this into some act of kindness. You do so that I won’t kill you.”

“Is it kindness that you want?” She laughed without humor. “A funny way you go about getting it.” She leaned forward in her anger. “Why are you saying these things? Truly? Why are you acting like such a… disgusting arse?”

He shot upright, his chest bumping into hers before she backed away a pace as if seared. “Because you never react during these torture sessions,” he ground out. “Because I want that rise out of you. I want you to…” He bared his teeth, those evil-looking fangs growing longer. “I want to know if you feel—”

His teeth ground together, his eyes wild and silver-black.

“Feel?” she prompted as if her heart wasn’t beating madly.

“Anything!” he roared. “Jesus.” He ran a hand through his hair. “You touch me every day. You rub your hands all over me. And nothing! Not a flicker of emotion. As if I didn’t exist.” The expanse of his chest heaved with exertion, the sinewy muscles along his abdomen clenching. “And all the while I’m lying here aching, fucking dying to… You’re driving me to insanity,” he finished with a wild shout. “And it means exactly nothing to you—”

She grabbed hold of the back of his neck and kissed him. Just as she’d wanted to, her lips claiming his parted ones, shutting off the stream of words that flowed from him. His lips were soft and warm, and touching them set off a rush of lust that coursed along her limbs. He froze, going so tense that his neck felt like ice. For all of one second. And then he attacked. His hands plunged into her hair and gripped the sides of her head as he fell back, hauling her with him, devouring her with quick, biting kisses, punctuated by helpless groans.

Breathless and dizzy, she answered every kiss, opening her mouth when his mouth demanded it. They both shivered when their tongues slid together.

“Hell,” he moaned, licking along her bottom lip. “Hell, I knew you’d taste so bloody good.” He angled his head, plunging his tongue in deep as his hands held her captive. The gesture wicked and decadent. Grunting, he spun them, pressing her into the table with the strength of his body. His thigh nudged between hers, and her skirts slid up. Instantly, his hand was there, long fingers trailing along her skin. “I’m not stopping,” he growled into her mouth. “So don’t ask me to.”

Holly tore her lips from his and grabbed a handful of silken hair. She held him fast and hard. “You’ll stop if I say so.”

Thorne paused, his lips brushing hers as he breathed heavily through his mouth. Hot, black eyes bore into her. “Are you asking me to stop?” He was so still and careful that she knew he would, despite his claim.

A fire raged through her veins. And the need to suckle his curved lower lip had her voice turning rough. “No.”

What a Duke Dares by Anna CampbellWhat woman in her right mind would say no to marrying the dashing Duke of Sedgemoor? Miss Penelope Thorne, that’s who. She’s known Camden Rothermere since they were children-and she also knows she’d bring nothing but scandal to his name.

Cam can hardly believe Penelope turned down his proposal. But if she wants to run off to the Continent and set the rumor mill ablaze, he can’t stop her. Then her brother’s dying request sends him to bring home the one woman he thought he’d finally gotten over.

The only way they’ll both get back to London without their reputations in tatters is to pretend they’re married during the journey. That means kissing like they mean it and even sharing a bed-until it becomes hard to tell where the game ends and true desire begins . . .

My Thoughts:

Camden Rothermere, Duke of Sedgemoor, fell victim to the old adage “Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.” Thank goodness he did, otherwise I would have had to open a magic portal to Fictionland and forcibly remove the stick lodged in his backside.  Marred by his parents’ scandals, Cam grew up eschewing  the idea of love.  Cam thought he wanted a biddable, quiet wife who would conform to society’s ideal of a proper duchess.  As a young man, he proposed to Penelope Thorne, the outgoing and vivacious sister of his good friend.  Despite their differences, Cam and Pen were actually close friends and that relationship prompted his proposal with the  intention of molding her into his model wife.  Pen wanted love and she knew Cam would not be able to return her sentiments.  She refused his proposal and fled to the Continent to heal from her heartache.

Without revealing too much of the well-paced and intriguing plot, let’s just say circumstances eventually forced Cam and Pen to marry.  The author does a wonderful job with the inner turmoil Pen conceals as she faces a future tied to the man she loves, whom she believes will never love her back.  The courage and strength of Penelope, both in action and emotion, was one of the most compelling parts of this novel for me.  After a disastrous wedding night (Kudos to Ms. Campbell for that!), Penelope decides to conform to Cam’s ideal and suppresses her natural lively personality.  Cam quickly realizes a quiet, biddable Penelope is NOT what he wants.

A secondary romance and scandal force Cam and Pen to face the problems in their own marriage and Cam’s emotional break through is touching and realistic.  WHAT A DUKE DARES has some deliciously steamy and evocative moments; the extra layers of emotion add depth and gravity to this captivating read.
